An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 rocked some 40km southeast of the town of Taron on the New Ireland Island, Papua New Guinea on Thursday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The quake struck at a depth of some 47km at around 03:36 GMT. No tsunami warning was issued, according to USGS.

There have been no reports of damage or casualties so far. The New Ireland island is home to some 120,000 people.
