Puerto Rico is taking a direct hit from a high-end category 4 hurricane this morning. Hurricane Maria makes landfall in US territory of Puerto Rico with maximum sustained winds of 250km/h (155mph)

Tourists are taking shelter in hotel ballrooms.

Tweets read: “We need help in Puerto Rico, utility poles down everywhere I can see from my home, apt behind my house lost roof!”

Maria, the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico since 1928, had maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.

The storm is expected to bring up to 16 inches of rain to the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and up to 25 inches to Puerto Rico, causing potentially deadly flash floods and mudslides. The islands could also see several tornadoes throughout Wednesday.
